SELF-DISCIPLINE

It doesn’t matter who we are, we all need self-discipline. It’s an important skill for proper development. What is self-discipline?

Self-discipline is not just about getting things done. It’s about doing things that should be done.

And if you haven’t already guessed it, self-discipline requires a little initiative on our parts. Self-discipline also means that sometimes you may need to make uncomfortable decisions to achieve success.

But, why is self-discipline so important?

Developing self-discipline has many benefits. For example, it helps to decrease anxiety and to achieve goals.

Think about this:

How do you usually feel when you’re overwhelmed with a lot of tasks? If you’re anything like me, anxiety starts to take over, making it impossible to get anything done. But, when you are self-disciplined, those tasks don’t overwhelm you because you thoroughly plan out how you will complete those tasks from start to finish.

So, how does one become more self-disciplined? Here are some tips.

START TO FINISH. I remember growing up and my aunt used to tell me, “finish”. I always used to start tasks and never finish. And that went for everything in life, even cooking. I always did things and never followed through. And that affected a lot of my goals in life. So, when wanting to develop self-discipline in your life, start by completing small tasks to a finish. This will also help you to see your goals more clearly and achieve them.

Plan Ahead. I cannot go a day without writing down my tasks for the day. I cannot stress this enough, plan your week. Don’t just plan your week, plan your day. Write down your tasks. Even if one of your tasks is to make your bed. It’s still something that you need to complete for the day. So, always plan ahead.

Progress not Perfection. Remember, it’s about progress not perfection. Done is better than perfect. There’s literally nothing else you can say to explain this. Finish the task, but don’t expect perfection. Just do it and do your best, that’s all that matters. When you focus too much on perfection, tasks/goals don’t get completed on time or at all.

Reward Yourself. Treat yourself. After completing tasks, make sure to treat yourself. There is nothing wrong with getting yourself a gift or treating yourself. Self-discipline isn’t easy. So, when you develop that skill and you end up completing a task/goal, treat yourself.

So, self-discipline is key to achieving goals. We all need self-discipline. Remember to plan your goals/tasks ahead of time. After planning out those tasks, finish. The key is to finish them and don’t expect perfection. And once you’ve completed those tasks/goals, remember to reward yourself.
